WE ARE SHELTERSUIT UK

Welcome to Sheltersuit UK

A Shelterbag is warm, waterproof, and portable; it will protect a rough sleeper from the elements all year round. But important though that is -- it's not the main thing that a Shelterbag does.

What a Shelterbag does, is it gives someone the chance to sleep.

Sleep is where the body repairs itself. When someone is cold through the night, wet, and getting no real rest, week after week, their immune system starts to fail. And it takes the mind down with it. Thinking clearly, holding a conversation, remembering an appointment, trusting a stranger who says they want to help — all of that depends on a functioning body and mind. Take away sleep, warmth and food for long enough, and those abilities go too.

That's why so many people sleeping rough seem hard to reach. It's not because they don't want help; of course they do. But they're physically incapable of engaging.

A Shelterbag interrupts that decline. It's not a home, and we don't pretend it is. But it's often the first thing that lets someone get properly warm and properly asleep in weeks. From there, the body starts to recover, and so does the mind. People become able to hold a conversation with an outreach worker, remember where a hostel is, turn up to an appointment. And that's when the agencies working to get someone housed can actually start their job.

We call it a bridge back to society. It doesn't replace the work of getting someone housed, but it makes that work possible.

Sheltersuit UK was set up in 2022 to build these bridges, one Shelterbag at a time, made from waste fabrics that would otherwise go to landfill, distributed through outreach workers, churches and support organisations who already know the people we're trying to reach.

There are many worthy agencies trying to get people off the streets and into housing. But housing takes time. And there are people sleeping outside tonight who don't have time. They need to be protected, now.

A Shelterbag isn't in competition with housing — it's what happens in the gap. And in that gap, warmth and sleep are what stand between someone functioning and someone deteriorating past the point where any offer of help can land.

PEOPLE HELPING PEOPLE

Who we aim to protect

We focus on the following two target groups and always distribute our products in collaboration with local support organisations.

Rough Sleepers in UK

Homeless people have lost their home, but may be in shelter or temporary accommodation. Rough sleepers have nothing, and are forced to live out in the open with no shelter. The numbers in UK have risen by approximately 24% in both the last 2 years, because there are simply not enough sheltered spaces to even remotely cope.

While these people are sleeping outside in the cold and the rain, we aim to provide them with a warm and waterproof shelter in the form of a Shelterbag. Warm and dry enough to sleep — and sleep is what starts to bring someone back to a place where they can think clearly and take the next step, whatever that looks like for them.

Disaster and Conflict

Disasters and conflicts cause large numbers of people to become homeless and often dis-placed. These people, with many being young, elderly, and sick……are always vulnerable and in urgent need of emergency aid. Our Shelterbags can keep them warm and dry and able to sleep, until such time as a longer-term solution appears.
